Concern over freight rates
The Lyttelton Harbour Board has joined the Chatham Islands County Council in expressing concern over the 35 per cent increase in freight rates for island cargo.
In a show of support for the islanders, the board decided at its meeting yesterday to write to the Undersecretary for Internal Affairs, Mr Thompson, and the Minister of Transport, Mr Gair, expressing its views on the freight increase, due to come into effect on May--20.
“It seems incredible that the charges are going up so much when everything else has been held for so long,” Mrs Judith Waters said.
“We should support the Chatham Islanders and not
take this lying down when the Government has placed emphasis on holding prices,” she said.
Mr I. D. Howell said the board should bring to the attention of the Government its request for price increases to be held between 3 and 4 per cent.
The general manager, Mr lan Brokenshire, told the board that the chairman of the Chatham Islands Link Committee, Mr Alan Smith, had taken up the matter with the Commissioner for the Chatham Islands and several members of Parliament.
Mr Smith would be seeking the delay of the new freight rate at least until June 10, Mr Brokenshire said.
