Police to act on complaint

PA Napier Napier police have confirmed that action is being taken against a Manurewa soccer player after an alleged assault when the Auckland side met Napier City Rovers in Napier on May 6. The Napier coach, Roger Wilkinson, made an assault complaint against a Manurewa player after an incident during the halftime break in the Rothmans League match. The Napier police chief superintendent, Kevin Ford,

said proceedings had started. “I’m not giving any more details,” he said. Police said a number of people, including the alleged offender, had been interviewed. The Hawke’s Bay Football Association chairman, Rod Pelosi, said yesterday that the association’s judicial committee asked for and received a report from Napier City Rovers on the incident and the events which led to it. The committee would recommend to the H.B.F.A.

management committee that the report be sent to the New Zealand Football Association and the Franklin F.A. (which governs Manurewa), with certain recommendations, Mr Pelosi said. It would be inappropriate to comment further because of pending police action, he added. The Manurewa club chairman, Mr Neville Callander, said he had no comment to make on the news of the charge. “I’m trying not to play it up,” he said.
