Broadcasting Corp, to be scrutinised
Parliamentary reporter The financial and management structures of the Broadcasting Corporation will come under the scrutiny of Parliament’s watchdog on public spending, the Public Expenditure Committee. After studying the recommendations of a committee of inquiry, which reported recently on complaints about the “That’s Country” programme, the committee has established a sub-com-mittee to look into the cor-
poration’s financial and management structures. The committee has also had discussions with the audit office, said the chairman of the sub-committee, the Chief Government Whip, Mr D. C. McKinnon. “It is evident from that (committee of inquiry’s) report and from information put in front of the committee that there is a need to probe deeply into the financial management systems,” Mr McKinnon said. The committee is the
same one which studied the financial management of Air New Zealand in 1982. It then made several recommendations, and Mr McKinnon said he expected the broadcasting inquiry would have “similar positive results.” He did not expect the committee’s investigation to interfere with the day-to-day activities of the Broadcasting Corporation, and there would be no pressure to conclude the investigation by a set date.
