Brooking bows out
NZPA-Reuter London Trevor Brooking, one of English soccer’s favourite sons, has ruled out the possibility of changing his mind about retiring. Brooking, who played his 522nd League game for West Ham earlier this week said: “That’s it. There will be no going back.” In a remarkable gesture of affection for the former England mid-field player, almost the entire 25,452 crowd — West Ham’s third biggest of the season —
waited patiently for 15 minutes after the match for Brooking to reappear from the dressing ground and complete a lap of honour on the shoulders of fans. “I was staggered to find so many people still in the ground,” said Brooking. “It just shows why I have stayed at West Ham for 19 years.” Brooking bowed out on a losing note, West Ham going down, 1-0, to the F.A. Cup finalists, Everton.
