Sale of cruise vessels ends notable era
During the last 12 months, the Norwegian cruise fleet has been substantially reduced. In May last year, two ships long established in cruising, the Vistafjord and the Sagafjord, were sold by Norwegian American Cruises, a company owned by a Norwegian shipping interest. The two ships had a combined passenger capacity of 1160. Last month saw the sale of the entire Royal Viking Line to a group of investors represented by the United States investment company, J. H. Whitney and Co. The line was S' id to have been sold for million. The Royal Viking Line owns three cruise ships, which have all called at Lyttelton, with a total capacity of about 2200 passengers. In just one year, five Norwegian cruise ships have been sold, bringing to an end a special era in Norwegian shipshipping companies are now concentrating heavily on cruises from Miami, Florida, to the Caribbean. The two dominating companies, Norwegian Caribbean Lines and the Royal Caribbean Lines together own nine ships capable of carrying about 9500 passengers. Other Norwegian companies have also gone in for the cruise market with several taking delivery of new vessels aimed at catering for the cream of the American market ARRIVALS Svet Laya (7.30 a.m.), 2690, sea (Scales). lyun Koran (9.30 a.m.), 2327, sea (Scales).
