Lyttelton P.E.P. start expected
A number of Project Employment Programme schemes which could provide temporary work for about 50 people in the Lyttelton borough, are expected to begin soon. Lyttelton Borough Council’s P.E.P. co-ordinating supervisor, Mr Barry Gardiner, said he had been told by the Labour Department yesterday that some of the council’s job creation schemes had been approved.
The announcement followed a report by Mr Gardiner to the works and reserves committee on Monday saying that the council was awaiting approval for 22 job creation schemes, some dating from February. Mr Gardiner said yesterday the Labour Department
had approved some of the schemes and the council “should hear back from them fairly shortly.”
Most of the schemes would be approved, said Mr Gardiner.
Between 45 and 50 people could start on P.E.P. jobs within several weeks, he said.
“I know the Labour Department can be under considerable pressure to have schemes approved on time and sometimes schemes go over time.” Mr Gardiner said there had been no indication that the P.E.P. schemes would cease.
“The schemes are going to employ more people and that is what they are all about,” he said.
