Fijian farmers at risk
NZPA-AAP Canberra Some Fijian farmers still mix dangerous agricultural chemicals with their bare hands and harvest crops before the statutory waiting period after spraying. This was in spite of the presence of agricultural field officers, the International Labour Organisation’s adviser on labour and population in the South Pacific, Mr Rueben Dudley, said in Canberra. The field officers’ advice often went unheeded because farmers preferred short-cut methods, he said. They also did not like wearing protective gear in the hot climate and resented the authority of the officers.
