‘Lack of time’ for review of core curriculum
Wellington reporter The Committee for Children has complained to the Minister of Education, Mr Wellington, about the lack of time for consultation about the review of the core curriculum for schools.
This committee of representatives from 50 member organisations, many of them national, could not make authoritative comments without further consultation with their own groups, said Ms J. Thomson for the committee.
The process of obtaining a true picture of the views of its members was necessarily a slow one for the committee, but Mr Welling-
ton had set a deadline of June 1 for comments.
She said the only way the committee could meet this deadline would be to bypass the views of its membership and, instead, send to the Minister the views of two or three interested executive members. The review document was too important to be dealt with in this cavalier fashion. The committee had set in motion the slow process of democratic consultation.
Mr Wellington was urged to revise the deadline so all organisations affiliated to the committee had a chance to contribute to the discussion, Ms Thomson said.
