Play to proceed

PA Auckland A play by an Auckland University lecturer, Mr Mervyn Thompson, will go ahead next month after students refused to vote on the play’s future. Five students have abstained from voting at a university theatre management committee meeting, allowing an earlier decision to postpone his play “Coaltown Blues,” to be overturned.

Mr Thompson was abducted by six women in February who chained him to a tree and publicly accused him of rapirf and

sexually harassing students. Feeling ran high on both sides at the university over the accusations and led the Students’ Association to use its influence on the Maidment Theatre sub-commit-tee to vote against the motion. The association’s president Ms Trish Mullins, said yesterday that students abstained from voting because they were not given the chance to debate the controversial issue.

Mr Thompson could not be reached for comment.

Police inquiries are continuing on his assault complaint.
