Danny Morris wins main boxing bout
Danny Morris simply had too many advantages for Stephen Henry in the main bout of the Woolston Working Men’s Club’s annual amateur boxing tournament yesterday. Displaying much of the skill which earned him a national intermediate title last season, Morris (Richmond W.M.C.) was a comfortable points winner against Henry (Woolston W.M.C.).
Morris made use of his natural assets of height and reach, and scored consistently with his left hand. But Henry fought valiantly in countering Morris’s leads, and Morris was prevented from getting through with his right-handed blows. Overall, the Woolston representatives lost six of their 11 bouts against allcomers. But the youthful Keri Hita, if a little fortunate to have the better of a majority decision over Bevan McCully (Temuka), and Ronnie Carroll, who stopped Jamie Jones (Temuka) in the third round, retained the Dick Gould Trophy for the home club. Woolston would actually have finished on the right side of the ledger had Peter Tootoo not been disqualified for hitting John Armstrong (Fidow’s) after the referee had called the boxers to stop. Tootoo had rocked Armstrong with the hardest punches of the afternoon, even though their contest lasted only 30s, and a knockout seemed inevitable.
The matching of Bob Penman (Woolston) and Ron Tulano (Papanui) was also an abbreviated affair. Penman won the opening round on all three judges’ cards before Tulano lowered him with a slick combination.
A similar fate befell Kerry Tinkler (Richmond), who was left sagging on the ropes after strong left and right-handed punches from Esene Faimalo (Woolston). A big lad, Faimalo only needed 30s to bring an end to the bout. Dean Calvert was awarded the Warren Stewart Memorial Trophy as the most impressive Woolston competitor. Pitted against a competent Ashburton boxer, Andy Woods, Calvert had to extend himself to win the first round. But Calvert’s flurries of blows had Woods retreating until the contest was stopped in the second round. The two : Bell’s-Kearns Motors entrants, Paul Kitchingham and Carl White, beat Woolston rivals. Kitchingham punched straighter against an onrushing Andre de Lautour — who suffered from a constantly bleeding nose, cautions for slapping, a slip to the canvas and a lost mouthguard — and White out-pointed Noel Edgeworth. Two of the three Timaru
visitors, David Blair and Murray Batchelor, were victorious — but Blair’s margin over Hemi Dempsey (Fidow’s) must have been marginal — and Carl Bradshaw conceded a points verdict to Gordon Samaeli (Fidow’s). Results (from Woolston unless otherwise stated):—
Keri Hita beat Bevan McCully (Temuka), majority points; Paul Kitchingham (Bell’s-Kearns Motors) beat Andre de Lautour, points; David Blair (Timaru) beat Hemi Dempsey (Fidow’s), majority points; Malcolm Hendry beat Mark Davis (Hickson’s), points; Gordon Samaeli (Fidow’s) beat Carl Bradshaw (Timaru), points; Dean Calvert beat Andy,Woods (Ashburton), r.s.c. Carl White (Bell’sKearns Motors) beat Noel Edgeworth, points. Murray Batchelor (Timaru) beat David Small, points; Ronnie Carroll beat Jamie Jones (Temuka), r.s.c. 3; John Armstrong (Fidow’s) beat Peter Tootoo, disqualification; Andrew Dolan (Ashburton) beat Nigel Innes (Temuka), points; Esene Faimalo beat Kerry Tinkler (Richmond), r-s.c. 1; Ron Tulano (Papanui) beat Bob Penman, r.s.c. 2; Danny Morris (Richmond) beat Stephen Henry, points.
