Skellerup top band again

Nelson reporter

The Skellerup Brass Band, Christchurch, is New Zealand’s champion band for 1984. The band cemented its claim to the title with wins in the hymn and test selections on Friday and Saturday evening. “An extremely successful championship,” said Mr Bruce Collett, the band’s president, as, laden with trophies, he left the Trafalgar Park venue for the final event, the marching championship, yesterday. As well as winning the trophy for the aggregate points in the A grade, the band won the Thomas Gray cup for most musical points in the selections hymn and marching contests. Skellerup won the street march on Saturday, and, as was expected, a great tussle developed between Skellerup and Continental Airlines, Auckland, for the marching championship yesterday. In the street march, Continental scored 88.4 points and Skellerup 88.8. Both bands gave magnificent displays, but the world and the 1983 New Zealand champion, Continental, secured 174.99 points to Skellerup’s 171.32, to win the marching title by 3.67. It was Skellerup’s second loss of a marching championship in 15 years. The Blenheim municipal band, with another of the intricate marching displays it has been putting on since it first introduced this type of display in 1963, was a
