Olympic tour link

NZPA-AFP Lusaka Zambia’s participation in the Los Angeles Olympics could hinge on England’s controversial Rugby Union tour of South Africa, due to begin later this month. Mr Wesley Nyirenda the Zambian Olympic Committee’s chairman and the chairman of the Commonwealth and All Africa Games Association, said Zambia would go to the Games even if the Soviet Union pulled out. He could not say specifically if Zambia would still be

present in Los Angeles if England went ahead with its South African tour. Mr Nyirenda said Zambia had encouraged participation in the face of political pressures on the Games. The only panacea for the Games' survival would be to divorce sport from politics, he said. The boycotting trend had continued since 1976 when African countries led a boycott in protest against the participation of New Zealand which had had sports links with South Africa, he noted.
