New Reuters board
PA Sydney Australian and New Zealand news organisations have strong representation on the board of Reuters Holdings PLC which was announced in London this week. The appointments are part of the restructuring of Reuters, the international news agency, announced on February 22 ahead of public flotation of the company, due later this month. The full list of directors of Reuters Holdings PLC is: Chairman. — Sir Denis Hamilton, former chairman of Times Newspapers, Ltd. Non-executive directors. — Mr Donald Anderson, of Business Press International, Ltd; Mr James Evans, of International Thomson Organisation PLC; Mr Peter Gibbings, the Guardian and Manchester Evening News PLC; Mr Pehr Gyllenhammar, chairman of the Swedish firm, Volvo; Mr Christopher Hogg, chairman of
Courtaulds PLC; Mr Rupert Murdoch, chief executive of the News Corporation, Ltd, of Adelaide, Mr Maxwell Suich, chief editorial executive of John Fairfax and Sons, Ltd, of Sydney, Mr Lyle Turnbull, of the Herald and Weekly Times Ltd of Melbourne; Mr Richard Winfrey, of East Midland Allied Press PLC; Mr Walter Wriston, chairman of Citicorp. Alternate directors. — Mr Alan Burnet, chairman of Independent Newspapers, Ltd, of New Zealand, Mr Ross Sayers, a director of New Zealand Newspapers, Ltd, of New Zealand. Executive directors — Mr Glen Renfrew, managing director and chief executive; Mr Michael Nelson, deputy managing director and general manager; Mr Nigel Judah, finance director ana secretary. The Reuters trustees have also announced the 14 individuals who are both members and trustees of the new Reuters Founders Share Company whose task is to ensure the world news organisation’s independence. They include the existing 10 trustees, who have appointed four new trustees not connected with the newspaper associations who own Reuters.
The new trustees are Mr Kingman Brewster, formerly president of Yale University and United States Ambassador in London, Mr John Freeman, formerly Chairman of London Weekend Television and British Ambassador in Washington, Professor Lord McGregor, chairman of the British Advertising Standards Authority and Mr Kenneth Morgan, Director of the British Press Council. These four will nominate their own successors. The existing trustees are: Mr Stanley Clarke, of Courier Press (Holdings), Ltd; Mr David Cole, of International Thomson Organisation PLC; Mr Gordon Linacre, of United Newspapers; Mr Jack Wallwork, of Daily Mail and General Trust PLC; Lord Hartwell, chairman and editor-in-chief of the “Daily Telegraph;” Lord Mattthews, chairman of Fleet Holdings PLC; Viscount Rothermere, chairman of Associated Newspapers; Mr Clive Thornton, chairman of Mirror Group; Sir Kenneth Macpherson, chairman of the Herald and Weekly Times of Melbourne; Mr Ray Smith, president of the Newspaper Publishers’ Association of New Zealand.
