BEST BETS

FRIDAY MASTERTON ANOTHER mini (Race 7), b m, ‘syrs, by Sergio Hanover—Mini Smile; trained at Stratford by P. Jones. Close second to Flying Game at Hawera on April 23. Looks the ready-made favourite here. N. WAIROA MATTHEW RYAN (Race 4), b c, 2yrs. by Takearisk—Glencora; trained at Avondale by D. I. Vincent. Second to Fothers recently. Looks above average. Has drawn favourably and deserves to win. SATURDAY AMBERLEY POKARE (Race 3), br c, 2yrs, by Claudio Nicolai—Royal Bird; trained at Riccarton by M. R. Pitman. Courageous winner of Champagne Stakes at Riccarton last month. Does not have a winner to oppose him in this field, and should be equal to the demands of top weight and a soft track. AUCKLAND KEV’S CHOICE (Race 1), br c, 2yrs, by Lonero—Tardina; trained at Morrinsville by M. Berger. Dead-heated with Peter Baker in his debut then a solid fourth behind Frederick after drawing the second line at Cambridge last week. Should be too classy in a moderate field. OAMARU MELVANDER (Race 1), bs c, 3yrs, by Great Evander— Lady Melissa; trained at Templeton by P. J. Robertson. Finished strongly for rather unlucky fourth in the Trotting Stakes on April 14 at most recent appearance. Little improvement needed to gain an overdue maiden win. WAIKATO LIBRICI (Race 10), b g, 3yrs, by Imperial Seal—Blondie; trained at Te Rapa by W. Winder. Relegated from first in the Avondale Championship Stakes a fortnight ago. Very smart type and looks a safe bet. WELLINGTON PASSIVE PRINCE (Race 6), b g, syrs, by Sovereign Prince—Summer Court; trained at Bulls by R. McSeveny. After being snookered on the fence and having no luck at all in the run home on the first day, he never saw daylight at any stage and wound up a luckless fifth in his open-class debut. He would need to improve little to win this.
