Vandalism at cemetery
The police believe that children may be responsible for the damage done to about eight headstones in the Waimairi cemetery on Monday evening. Crosses were ripped from about eight headstones in the older part of the cemetery, said the Waimairi District Council’s reserves superintendent, Mr Graeme Nind. A mock grave was made from the crosses and some flowers and placed near a shelter used by the cemetery’s sexton. “It is sick,” said Mr Nind. The damage was discov-
ered when council staff arrived for work at the cemetery, in Grahams Road, yesterday morning. They spent yesterday tidying the damaged graves. Council officers were investigating who would be responsible to pay for the damaged headstones, said Mr Nind. Some of the headstones damaged were about 50 years old. Anyone who may have seen suspicious activity in the cemetery on Monday evening is asked to get in touch with the Papanui police.
