Chandler joins Karpov

NZPA-Reuter London The young New Zealand chess grandmaster, Murray Chandler, has joined the world champion, Anatoly Karpov, of the Soviet Union,, in the lead after 10 rounds of an international tournament in London yesterday. However, Karpov seems certain to regain the lead. His tenth game against an Englishman, Jonathan Mestel, has been adjourned, but Karpov had all the winning chances, according to the experts. Chandler kept in close contact with the lead by beating another Russian, Rafael Vaganian, but he lost his adjourned ninth-round game to Tony Miles, of England. Lev Polugaevsky, of the Soviet Union, lost his second place and suffered his first loss when he was upset by Jonathan Speelman (England), and another Englishman, John Nunn, beat a leading candidate, Yasser Seirawan, of the United States. Standings after 10 rounds:— Karpov 7 (one adjourned), Chandler 7, Polugaevsky GVz, Seirawan 5¥2 (one adjourned), Vaganian 5%, Jan Timman 5 (one adjourned), Zoltan Ribli (Hungary) 5, Viktor Korchnoi (Switzerland) 4%, Miles 4 (one adjourned), Speelman 4, Ulf Andersson (Sweden) 3¥z, Mestel 3 (two adjourned), Nunn 3, Eugenio Torre (the Philippines) 2¥2 (two adjourned).
