Kiwifruit cargo delay averted

Shipping delays threatening the first European shipment of kiwifruit for the season have been averted, and the consignment will depart on schedule. Industrial disruptions in Australia delayed the early vessels that the New Zealand European Conference Lines had earmarked for kiwifruit, but alternative cargo space has now been found. The secretary of the Kiwifruit Exporters Association, Mr John Aitken, said the co-operation extended by other primary export producers and the flexibility shown by the Conference Lines had enabled the association to overcome what could have been a big setback on the European market. “The early-season sales In Europe are a vital Ingredient in our marketing effort,” he said. “Earlier this week we were faced with the possible loss of substantial export income, but Conference Lines had a ship in New Zealand waters and the meat, wool, dairy and other individual exporters agreed to delay their shipments to later vessels, to make way for kiwifruit,” Mr Aitken said. At the Port of Lyttelton, five vessels will sail today, compared with the arrival of one Russian trawler. This will ease the demand for berths. The Toyo Fuji No. 8 is due in port tomorrow to unload knocked-down car parts, and will sail for Auckland the same day. A Russian passenger vessel Priamurye is also expected tomorrow, carrying a crew change. Crews from four Russian trawlers, the Kremen, Mys

Obrucheva, Kalinovo and Pirit, will be exchanged. ARRIVALS Spirit of Free Enterprise (7 a.m.), 1204, Wellington (Pacifica). Erne (7.30 a.m.), 13,728, Wellington (U.M.S.).
