Stewart Is. ferry move ‘bad one’
PA Dunedin Southland travel industry representatives have condemned the Government decision to replace the BluffStewart island ferry service with a 50-passenger vessel. Several delegates from Southland and Stewart Island at the South Island Promotion Association conference in Dunedin have told Mr D. L. Kidd, the Government member of Parliament for Marlborough, that the recently announced decision was unacceptable. The Ministry of Transport is expected to draw up design specifications soon, and Mr Kidd said the roll-on vessel should enter service
late next year or in early 1986. Passenger numbers on the ferry have dropped almost 50 per cent in seven years, while the number of people flying to Stewart Island had increased markedly, said Mr Kidd. The total subsidy on the service last year was nearly $1 million. “The net cost of the new vessel to the Government during the next 10 years is estimated to be approximately half that of continuing with the Wairua. “It will also be significantly cheaper than the cost of a new 150-passenger vessel,” said Mr Kidd.
