Forest clearance

Sir,—Your correspondent Eric Bennett refers (May 1) to the “blatant” violation of the indigenous forests policy in the proposed Perseverance project. This project was planned in accordance with the policies of the West Coast United

Council under the authority of that council’s regional plan, which carries the signature of the GovernorGeneral. A background fact that should be known to your readers is that, given no alienation of any land as reserves, it is possible to develop for production less than 20 per cent of West Coast land, the remaining 80 per cent being almost wholly clad in virgin forest. The land capable of development is already eroded by numerous reserves. The needs of people locally and nationally demand that the sort of development proposed for Perseverance should take place, without political interference from people who are not prepared to have a stake in this region on which they depend for a livelihood.—Yours, etc.,

J. R. O’REGAN. Reefton, May 2, 1984.
