Military cover-up alleged
NZPA-AP London ■ Military authorities in Zimbabwe have carried out an “extensive cover-up of atrocities committed in Matabeleland” ahead of a scheduled visit by journalists, the “Sunday Times” has reported. It said that before a conducted tour to the “curfew zone” arranged by the Zimbabwe Information Ministry for next Thursday, “graves of civilian victims have been dug up and their corpses doused with kerosene and set alight. Other bodies have been removed from the area altogether.” The newspaper said that thousands of people were released from custody as part of the cover-up, and that prisoners who bore injuries too severe to allow them to be freed locally were removed from the curfew area. It said Matabeleland residents were told by soldiers not to complain to journalists about beatings and killings.
