Saint’s blood liquefies
NZPA-Reuter Naples About 1000 Neapolitans applauded wildly yesterday when the blood of Saint Januarius liquefied, indicating that the saint would continue to protect Naples, Catholic church sources said. The congregation followed glass phials carrying the dried blood around
the Basilica of Santa Chiara in procession before settling down to pray and after four hours the blood began to bubble and turn into a liquid, the sources said. The liquefaction of the saint’s blood has been reported three times a year almost without fail since the Middle Ages. Scientists have often watched the event but
have never been able to explain it. Naples’ patron, Saint Januarius, was martyred by the Romans in the fourth cenS. Neapolitans credit him having saved Naples from plagues and from devastation by the nearby volcano, Vesuvius, on many occasions in the last 1500 years.
