Appeal short of target
About $BO,OOO was collected by the North Canterbury centre of the Red Cross Society in this year’s house-to-house appeal, $9OOO short of target. The result is provisional. The centre’s secretary manager, Mr J. R. Mahoney, said yesterday that there was still “quite a bit to come in” but that $BO,OOO was the estimated total It is below the 1983 figure of $82,500.
Asked why takings were down, Mr Mahoney said that it was a product of the economic climate, a shortage of collectors, and poor planning in some areas. However, he said that the amount raised was adequate for the centre’s needs and that it was “tremendous” given the circumstances. The area canvassed by the appeal stretched from the Rakaia River to the Conway River and from the sea to the mountains.
