Ski equipment popular
Cold Christchurch weather only whetted the appetites of would-be skiers at yesterday’s annual ski sale at Riccarton Racecourse.
The queue for the sale began forming before 7 a.m., said Mrs Prue Taylor, the publicity officer for the Tekapo Ski Club which ran this year’s sale. Thousands must have passed through the gates from when they opened at 9 a.m. until they closed at 1 p.m., she said. The day’s takings from the sale of ski goods and entry fees totalled a record $140,000, said Mrs Taylor. This was $30,000 more than last year’s gross takings.
The final count will not be known until mid-week when various costs have been deducted.
This year about 4000 items, ranging from ski boots to ski overalls, were offered for sale. Many of the customers were families with children to outfit and young people, said Mrs Taylor.
Fifteen per cent of the sale price will be retained as commission and will be split between the Tekapo Ski Club abd the Canterbury Ski Association.
The Tekapo Ski Club intends to use its share of the proceeds to upgrade and maintain its ski hut, said Mrs Taylor.
