Iran wants to few more lamb

PA Wellington Iran wants to buy 12,000 tonnes more New Zealand lamb. The move by Iran is one of three main trade moves initiated by the Meat Board this year.

The board’s chief executive, Mr Jim Bremmer, said yesterday that an option for a further 10 per cent of the present season’s main lamb contract with Iran had been exercised. Iran has two contracts for New Zealand lamb, one for 20,000 tonnes and the other, signed in November last year, for 120,000 tonnes for a total of 140,000 tonnes.

A 10 per cent option on the 120,000 tonnes contract has been exercised, and the total will now be 152,000

tonnes. Last November, when the main contract was signed, the board estimated that it could be worth $3OO million to $4OO million. Based on that figure, the extension to the main contract would be worth between $25 million and $3O million.

Mr Bremmer said that the board had also developed a total barter trade concept with Poland to sell it lamb and mutton in return for a range of goods of equal value, including mining equipment, industrial and fishing boats. A sample container-load of lamb also had been sent to Hungary, and the board was now working to export mutton and manufactured meats.
