Rushed flight to Chch

A mother and child are in a stable condition in Christchurch Women’s Hospital after an emergency flight from the Chatham Islands to Christchurch yesterday morning.

A Royal New Zealand Air Force Friendship aircraft was sent from Wigram Air Force Base on Saturday after the woman, who was expecting twins, went into premature labour. Included on the flight were a pediatrician, an obstetrician, a nurse, and two incubators. The babies were born soon after the medical team arrived at the islands but one baby died shortly after birth.

The mother and surviving child were flown back to Wigram from where they were taken to Christchurch Women’s Hospital by St John Ambulance. No names had been released last evening.
