New child safety car seat invented

A car child safety seat invented by Mr Michael Rothel, a retired businessman, of Christchurch has been approved by the Standards Institute and the Ministry of Transport.

The seat differs from existing child restraints by being built into the back seat of the car.

Mr Rothel first thought of the ideal for the seat 20 years ago, and decided to act on it after seeing a television commercial

warning of the danger of having children unrestrained in cars. At the end of January this year, Mr Rothel demonstrated his seat to representatives of the D.5.1.R., the Accident. Compensation Corporation, the Ministry of Transport, and Toyota New

Zealand. Mr Rothel had constructed the first seat by opening up the back of a bench car seat, installing a fold-down squab, padding the edges, and attaching a

seat-belt to the back. He and a business partner now manufacture and install the seats. A production model of the seat has been fitted in a Mitsubishi Tredia on display at McLaren Motors, St Asaph Street. Mr Rothel said that McLaren’s were promoting the seat. Mr Rothel said that in the interests of safety, other car manufacturers should also be interested in the seat.
