Band titles at Nelson

More than 40 brass bands from New Zealand and Australia will test their music and marching skills at Nelson next week in the annual New Zealand brass band championships. This year’s contest is expected to be the largest held by the Brass Bands’ Association, attracting about 39 New Zealand entrants and three Australian bands. Christchurch will be represented by last year’s runner up in the A grade championship, the Skellerup Brass Band, the B grade Addington Workshops Band, the B grade Christchurch Metropolitan Fire Brigade, and D grade Rangiora Brass Band, and the Ashburton Silver Band. The week-long competitions will feature titles for the best band in the street march, quick-step display, and hymn test, and band members will compete for solo, duet, and ensemble titles.
