Man threw two children from bridge —witnesses
PA
Auckland
Auckland detectives are waiting for a man, aged 31, to recover from injuries so they can interview him about the deaths of two children who were allegedly thrown from the Auckland Harbour Bridge during the week-end.
Witnesses have told the police they saw a man throw two children over the bridge and then jump over himself about 6 p.m. on Saturday. The body of one of the children has been found. The police failed to find the body of the second child after extensive searches on Saturday evening and yesterday. The dead boy was
Haydon lan Money, aged 3. His missing sister is
Vanessa Lynn Money, aged 5.
Detective Inspector John Palmer, of the Auckland Central C. 1.8., said that about 6 p.m. on Saturday two motor-cyclists had flagged down a passing motorist and his family. The motor-cyclists said they saw a man throw two small children from the bridge and jump over himself.
Mr Palmer said searchers had found Haydon Money,
but in spite of resuscitation, he had died. A man, aged 31, was rescued from the harbour and taken to Auckland Hospital with broken bones, and internal injuries consistent with a big fall. He was in the intensive care unit last evening. Mr Palmer said he believed detectives would not be able to have a full interview with the man for two or three days. He declined to comment in detail on the case, but said it was alleged that a man threw two children off the bridge and then jumped off himself. “We are treating the matter as a homicide,” said Mr Palmer.
