Women make hockey finals
Canterbury qualified for the finals of the A.N.Z. women’s under-21 provincial hockey competition when it won a zone qualifying tournament at Darfield over the week-end. But Canterbury did not qualify as comfortably as it has done in previous years. It progressed to the finals on goal difference, and then by one goal, ahead of Ashburton. Both Canterbury and Ashburton finished the sixteam, round robin competition with nine points; both scored 18 goals; but Canter-
bury’s goal difference was superior because it conceded one goal and Ashburton conceded two. In its final game yesterday Canterbury was held too 1-1 by South Canterbury at half-time and it had to win by three clear goals to qualify ahead of Ashburton. It scored two goals in the last 10 minutes to give it the advantage of one goal. Had it finished with the same goal difference as Ashburton, Canterbury would have qualified by virtue of a penalty-stroke competition, which it won, 4-1,
after the teams drew, 0-0, on Saturday. Results were: Round one: Nelson 3, Marlborough 3; Canterbury 5, Marlborough 0; Ashburton 7, South Canterbury 0. Round two: Marlborough 1, Malvern 0; Nelson 1, South Canterbury 0; Canterbury 0, Ashburton 0. Round three: Marlborough 2, South Canterbury 0; Canterbury 7, Nelson 0; Ashburton 5, Malvern 0. Round four: Malvern 1, South Canterbury 1; Ashburton 3, Nelson 1; Canterbury 1, Marlborough 0. Round five: Nelson 2, Malvern 1; Ashburton 3, Marlborough 1; Canterbury 5, South Canterbury 1.
