Memorable day for B. Pelling

From W. R. CARSTON Blenheim The combined efforts of Ankerman, Battle Action and Ankerson made the day memorable for Barry Pelling at Blenheim on Saturday. These three were all successful in the hands of the Riccarton horseman and gave him a 100 per cent riding record for the day. Pelling, who only recently was granted an open jockey’s licence, had Ankerman as his lone mount when he arrived at Blenheim but he fluked the ride on Battle Action when Jim Collett arrived on the course a few minutes after official weigh-out time for the Alan Bishop Maiden and he secured the mount on Ankerson in the Waterlea Catering Maiden after his highweight success on that runner’s stablemate. Ankerman and Ankerson both carry the colours of their Otaki trainer, Colin Wallace, a transport operator, who because of business commitments, was unable to attend the first day of the meeting. Battle Action is prepared for his wairarapa owners, Messrs M. N. and R. A. Anderson, by Kevin Thomson, at Foxton.

Although North Island horses made a clean sweep of the major prizes on Saturday it was a pretty good day all round for South Island riders. Sharon Reid rode two winners, Princess Dan and Respring, and Tane Matthews got Gividago home first in the two-year-old event.
