League replacements

NZPA staff correspondent London Trevor Skerrett, the Hull prop named last month to captain the Great Britain rugby league side in Australia, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea this winter, has been forced to withdraw from the tour. He has been sidelined from the game since January by damaged knee ligaments and failed a fitness test yesterday. The Great Britain side will now be led by Brian Noble, the Bradford northern hooker. Noble, 23, has played just four internationals but he captained Britain on his fourth appearance against France in February. He was Britain’s young player of the year in 1982-83 and made his international debut that season against the all-conquering Australian tourists. It has also been confirmed that Great Britain’s other probable first-choice prop, Len Casey, will miss the tour. A Rugby League appeals

board decided that the experienced Hull Kingston Rovers player will serve a six months suspension for pushing a touch judge after being ordered from the field last month. The replacements for Casey and Skerrett in the 30-man touring party, which plays three tests in New Zealand in July, were named today as Chris Arkwright, 25, a St Helen’s utility player and Wayne Proctor, 20, a Hull second rower.
