Irrigators forced to disband
PA Dunedin Faced with options they considered too costly for the repair and upgrading of the Omakau and Manuherikia irrigation schemes, the Manuherikia Valley irrigation committee in Central Otago has been disbanded. The irrigators have asked the Ministry of Works and Development to prepare costings for rejuvenation of the essential parts of the Manuherikia scheme, and these should be ready by September, said the secretary of the disbanded committee, Mr B. O’Neill. The meeting in Omakau of about 40 irrigators were told of costings of $14.1 million and $39.1 million. “The costings are such that the irrigators cannot afford to go ahead,” Mr O’Neill said. “However, we have reason to believe that the Manuherikia rejuvenation costs will be such that we can handle them,” he said. The Omakau and Manuherikia irrigators will now act through separate committees.
