Promising start to rep. hockey season

A Canterbury XI made an encouraging start to the representative hockey season at the expense of the morale of the Canterbury

colts team at Porritt Park oval yesterday. The Canterbury XI won 82 after leading 4-1 at halftime, and exposed some glaring holes in the colts’ defence which will need to be attended to before the team defends the national colts’ provincial title at Wanganui next week. Canterbury was given too much latitude in the forward line by the colts, and George Carnoutsos and lan Riach in particular, made deep inroads into the colts’ defence. These two forwards also caused problems in the colts’ half-line with their active back-tackling. Numerous times David Penfold, the colts’ centre-half, was robbed of possession in the mid-field by Carnoutsos.

Chris Leslie was another member of the Canterbury attack to play well, mainly in the role of initiating attacks and he scored six of the goals, including a hattrick in the second half. lan Riach and Richard Shoeman were the other goal scorers. The colts’ goals were scored

by Selwyn Wong and Simon Willocks. The colts were not totally outclassed and did their share of attacking, but inaccurate passing among the forwards cost the team good attacking opportunities. In the latter stages of the game the colts were reduced to solo attacks, mainly by David Grundy, who at that stage was playing at centre-forward. Robin Wilson was a dominant figure at centre-half for Canterbury, and at leftback Andy Innes tackled and covered well. John Radovonich was more assertive at insideright in the colts team in the second half, than he had been on the right-wing in the first half. But he was closely marked and his role was mainly one of a link with the other forwards.

Andrew Dove, at insideleft for the colts, was a constructive and tireless worker, and the defence all played diligently under the constant barrage of attacks. John Slaughter in the goal made some excellent saves.
