Avonside sets pace

The top-seeded Avonside No 1 team confirmed its strong favouritism to retain its A grade title when the first round of the Canterbury table tennis inter-club competition was played. The South Island women’s and men’s champions, Jan Morris and Maurice Burrowes, supported by Burrowes’s brother, Michael, were too strong for Riccarton’s Lockhart brothers, 111. The second seeded player of last season, Michael Hamel, displayed good early season form to lead Linwood to an 8-4 victory over Avonside 111. However, Mike Warren provided him with stout opposition, and went down by the narrow margin of 20-22 in the deciding third set. Others to open their season on a high note with three singles wins were Riccarton’s Grant McCarroll, John Armstrong, and Alan Alabaster. This augurs well for McCarroll, who leaves this week for Perth as a member of the New Zealand junior team.
