Cabinet to discuss Skyhawk sale
PA Wellington The Cabinet will consider a price in the next few weeks for buying 10 Skyhawk jet fighterbombers from the Royal Australian Navy, said the Minister of Defence, Mr Thomson, yesterday. Negotiations had resulted in a,figure which he would take to the Cabinet, he said. Reports from Canberra in February said that talks in Wellington between defence officials had resulted in
Australia lowering its price, and that the sales seemed certain to be made. Australia had proposed a price, according to the Times,” of about sAust7o million for all the planes and associated spare parts. A reasonable market price was put at sAust4o million. The Skyhawks were the main strike force on the former Australian flagship, the aircraft carrier Melbourne.
