Tongan seaweed wins support for N.Z. firm
PA Opotiki An Opotiki company has successfully negotiated a development project with the Commonwealth Secretariat based on commercial seaweed growing in Tonga. Coast Biologicals, Ltd, uses seaweed to manufacture a range of products including liquid fertiliser, food stablisers, and diagnostic agar for use in scientific research. The seaweed is collected
mainly from the New Zealand coastline or imported when a variety not found here is required. About two years ago Coast Biologicals began negotiations with the secretariat’s development division for technial co-opera-tion. The company was encouraged to do a study into the growing of commercial quantities of seaweed in Tonga. The aims of the scheme.
were to provide local employment and export revenue for the small Pacific nation. Research by Coast Biologicals found that Tongan waters were capable of growing the seaweed species Eucheuma, normally only available in the South China Sea, but in heavy demand for the production of carrageenan — the base of food stabilisers for a wide range of processed foods.
