Hornby regains form

Hornby regained its winning rugby league way when it beat Halswell, 28-7, in surprisingly easy fashion at the Show Grounds last evening. Two spectacular tries by Wayne Wallace, who received the “man of the match” award, another by Robin Alfeld, and magnificent goal-kicking by Barry Edkins had Hornby ahead, 22-7, at half-time even though Halswell had shared the honours territorially.

John Griffiths, Marty Crequer and Adrian Shelford were others to stand out for Hornby, while Halswell could have done with more players such as Phil Prescott, Darryl Hawker and Tony Baughan. Papanui was always on course to its eventual 28-18 win over Eastern Suburbs in the early game. It led 12-6 at the interval after playing into a stiff wind, and crossed for two quick tries soon afterwards.

Scores:— Papanui 28 (K. Pearce, J. Blazey, G. C. Roberts, D. Mayell, J. Cole tries; R. Ah Kuoi four goals) beat Eastern Suburbs 18 (G. R. Hamburger 2, L. J. Clarke tries; S. W. Elstone three goals). Referee: Mr N. Turner. Hornby 28 (W. J. Wallace 2, R. L. Alfeld, V. Low tries; B. R. Edkins six goals) beat Halswell 7 (N. Ward try; P. Bancroft goal; J. Whittaker goal). Referee: Mr T. Drake.
