Wasp swarms terrorise town

PA Greymouth Hundreds of marauding wasps at Nelson Creek have nearly closed a picnic area, forced caravanners to lock themselves in during the day, and have even pene-

trated the local hotel. The publican and chairman of the school committee, Mr Allan Tibbles, said that school children were terrified by the swarms. Three residents launched an attack on the wasps, destroying 47 nests within a radius of 360 metres in the last three weeks. Mr Tibbles said that the wasps almost shrouded vegetation in the area. “They’re getting worse now, because their tucker supply is getting down and they are hungry,” he said. Wasps thrive in the area because of a large area of beech trees on which they feed. Mr Tibbles wants the DS.LR. to observe and assess the situation.
