Box 5529, DUNEDIN. ™JNew Zealand, HO Dairy Research Institute DUE TO INCREASED DEMANDS on its research programme the Institute is inviting applications for a number of new positions. The institute, which is funded by the dairy industry and Government, is a world leader in dairy research and is New Zealand’s central organisation for research in the dairy manufacturing Industry. The institute has a staff establishment of over 200 and is situated adjacent to Massey University and DSIR in Palmerton North. BAKERY TECNOLOGIST/RESEARCH OFFICER Applications are invited from persons with relevant tertiary qualifications and experience in food product development, preferably with industrial experience in the bakery Industry, to the position of research officer in the whey products sections. The successful applicant will be expected to work on the application of all suitable dairy-based Ingredients in baked goods and to work closely with the bakery industry. (Vacancy 366). CONFECTIONERY TECHNOLOGIST/RESEARCH OFFICER The appointee will be part of the product use plus evaluation section, and will be responsible for investigations into the incorporation of dairy products in confectionery items. Many dairy products are already used in this area, but with newer technology creating new products, there is potential for tailor-making products for more specific end usage. This position would suit a graduate in food technology or home science with commercial experience in the confectionery industry, but other graduates with relevant qualifications or experience should feel free to apply. (Vacancy 362). SENSORY EVALUATION RSEARCH OFFICER TECHNICAL OFFICER Both these positions are in the busy sensory evaluation group of the product use plus evaluation section. The research officer will be involved in both the training and co-ordination of sensory panels and product development work. The technical officer will be responsible for the day-to-day running of the institute’s sensory evaluation service. Both positions will suit persons who are highly selfmotivated, enjoy a job with a high degree of independence and interaction with other people. Applicants should have tertiary qualifications with a background in home science, but other qualifications and suitable experience in the food industry will be considered. (Vacancies 363 and 369). RESEARACH OFFICERS - BASIC RESEARCH Three new research officer positions have arisen due to the expansion of the flavour, milkfat and butter, and protein chemistry sections. Applications are invited from graduates with at least an honours degree in chemistry, biochemistry, physics, food technology or related fields. The flavour section is Involved in fundamental and applied research concerned with the isolation, chemical characterisation and formation of trace quantities of organic compounds which impart desirable and undesirable flavours to dairy products. The appointee should be conversant with modern methods used to isolate and identify organic compounds. (Vacancy 367). The position in the milkfat and butter section is for a research officer to work on basic topics including rheology of butter and other fat products, melting and solidification of fats and their component triacylglycerols and compositional and structural analysis of milkfat. The section is well equipped with modern analytical instruments including capillary GLC, PerkinElmer DSC and low resolution Broker NMR. Further facilities are available within the Institute, at DSIR or Massey University. The appointee will be expected to assume responsibility for the section’s instruments. (Vacancy 359). The protein chemistry section’s successful candidate will work on projects designed to elucidate the effects of processing on milk proteins and milk protein products. The ability to exploit a range of physico-chemical, spectroscopic and chromatographic tools is necessary. (Vacancy 364). ENGINEERS/TECHNOLOGISTS Graduates in chemical engineering, biotechnology or food technology with an Interest in the dairy industry are required for two new rsearch officer positions in the milk powders and drying section. Work will include the investigation of unit operations used in the milk powder industry, development of processes for the manufacture of new milk powder products and assistance to dairy companies in the establishment of new milk drying plants (Vacancies 360 and 361). PHYSICAL CHEMIST/FOOD TECHNOLOGIST This research officer position, which is in the casein and related products section, will be involved in research related to the physical and sensory properties of casein products and will be required to work closely with the industry. Applicants should hold a degree in either chemistry or food technology, or a related field. Experience would be an advantage but is not essential (Vacancy 368). AGRICULTURAL SCIENTIST/RESEARCH OFFICER This position is.within the effluent technology section and would suit a graduate in soil science or agricultural science. The appointee will be involved in the land disposal of whey, a by-product from the manufacture of cheese and casein. The appointee will be expected to work on the design/evaluatlon of systems for the application of whey to land, determination of appropriate application rates and to study their effects on pasture/crop growth and the soil nutrient status (Vacancy 365).
