Import controls

Sir,—A recent correspondent, Graham Kennett (April 26), defending the quality of New Zealandmade tyres, cited bicycle tyres as an example of a high-quality product that has been displaced in the market by cheap imports, with a subsequent loss in local employment. As an experienced cyclist, I take issue on this point. New Zealand-made cycle tyres are inferior in design and materials to virtually all imported tyres, regardless of price or quality. Cycle manufacturers, retailers and cyclists themselves njade submissions to the Industry Development Commission because locally manufactured tyres (and tubes) were inferior, not because they were more costly.—Yours, etc.,

TIM KERR. April 27, 1984.
