Anzac Day speeches
Sir, — If there is no generation gap in New Zealand some Anzac Day speakers are doing their best to create one. the Rev. Mr Westra may have been tactless in his address, but other speakers also stepped out of line when they seized the opportunity to attack the peace movement. Few people would sneer at the R.S.A.’s wish to commemorate former comrades who died for an ideal, albeit often unexpressed. In return, I feel the R.S.A. should sympathise with those who believe that the days are over when wars could be justified because they brought out the best in men, as well as the worst. The foreseeable consequences of a war in the 1980 s are so much more frighteningly destructive compared with the 1930 s that every possible suggestion for solving the nuclear problem should be both respected and carefully examined. Abusive catch phrases and cliched arguments are no longer good enough. — Yours, etc.,
VERNON WILKINSON. April 29, 1984.
