Comfortable lead

NZPA-AAP Kingston, Jamaica If only Australia had held its catches at Sabina Park yesterday, the fifth test against the West Indies would be wide open. As it was, Australia’s bowlers performed magnificently yesterday to restrict the West Indies to 238 runs in the six hours play, and take six wickets. But it could have been so much better — of the five catches put down, four were easy. The West Indies were 6/263 at stumps, with a lead of 64 on the first innings and with the dangerous Jeffrey Dujon, alrep.iy a century-maker in the senes, still there on 19. Things looked decidedly

grim for Australia when the West Indies openers, Gordon Greenidge and Desmond Haynes, added. 162 for the first wicket to put their side within 37 of Australia’s first innings total. But with Geoff Lawson, Rodney Hogg, Tom Hogan and John Maguire bowling with inspiration, the six wickets fell for the addition of only 101 more runs. Lawson and Hogan each took two wickets and Maguire one, but Hogg, despite being wicketless, did his job superbly. While all the West indies batsmen struggled, including Haynes who made 60. Greenidge carved out a marvellous ninth test century. Greenidge made 127 in 285 minutes with 16 crunching boundaries.
