Sir Dapper’s career over?
NZPA-AAP Sydney An X-ray examination will determine the future of champion colt, Sir Dapper, but it is unlikely the three-year-old will race again. He was injured in the All Aged Stakes at Randwick on Saturday. Sir Dapper received a deep cut behind the knee of his near foreleg when placing second to Emancipation, and was very shaky when he returned to the birdcage. His trainer, Les Bridge, said it was unlikely Sir Dapper’s connections would risk him on the track again. The veterinarian, Percy Sykes, said the area surrounding the injury is full of nerves and tendons and the colt is fortunate not to have suffered irreparable damage. “The feelings of his owners is that he is such a valuable horse that it may not be worth risking him again,” said Mr Bridge. At first it was not certain how the injury occurred, but Mr Bridge said the stewards’ film clearly showed the colt coming into contact with Tempestuous about the 1200 m mark. Because of the awkward position of the injury — Mr
Bridge said it was the first like it he had seen in 20 years as a trainer — the wound cannot be stitched and has been dressed with a gauze bandage.
