Seven world records in masters event

Seven world records were broken on the final day of the Arena international masters swimming championships at Queen Elizabeth II Park on Saturday. Vivienne Cherriman. swimming for the Seaclose club, England. in the women’s 75 to 79 years events, was responsible for two of the records. She set new marks in the 200 m breaststroke with a time of smin 42.20 s (old record, 5:56.57) and in the 1500 m freestyle with a time of 33min 25.91 s (34:24.50). In the women’s 85 to 89 years age-group, an American swimmer, Ella Peckham (Walnut Creek Masters), slashed nearly 6min off the old record for the 200 m breaststroke with her winning time of 7:45.92 (13:42.68). Other world records broken were: William Babcock (Pirana, U.S.A.), 35 to 39 years, 1500 m freestyle, 17:53.72 (17:53.89); Yvonne Cattrall (Trillium, Canada), 35 to 39 years, 200 m breaststroke, 3:01.45 (3:05.62); Jane McCollister (Tamalpais Aquatic, U.S.A.), 65 to 69 years, 1500 m freestyle, 28:32.08 (29:19.17); Al Kallunki (Waikiki Swim Club, U.S.A.), 80 to 84 years, 200 m breaststroke, 4:47.25 (4:48.91). The organisers were mildly embarrassed on the last day of the meeting because of a shortage of gold and silver medals for the presentation. When they unpacked

some on Friday they found that 70 gold medals and 30 silver medals had not been through the manufacturing finishing process. Consequently all Saturday's gold medal winners and several of the silver medal winners will receive their awards later by post. But the officials won some reward for their hard work over the five-day championships when the 1100 competitors gave them a prolonged standing ovation. A feature of the final proceedings at the Queen Elizabeth II Park pool was the novelty “Canterbury race,” contested over 50m by swimmers in a colourful array of period costumes. Among them was the meet director, Mr Maurice Duckmanton, swimming under the name of "Dynamic Ducko” in striped kneelength trunks.
