Badminton Bryndwr beats depleted Railway
The batting order has changed but the faces remain the same at the top of the A grade club badminton competition after fourth round matches at the Skellerup Hall on Saturday. The reason for the alteration was not entirely a sudden drop in the form of the previous two leading teams, South Brighton I and Railway I. Both teams were without their top two players. Shane Tetai and Colleen Hellyer (South Brighton) and Graham Sercombe and Jane Clarke (Railway) were competing in the national doubles tournament in Auckland during the week-end, severely depleting their respective teams’ ranks. They were not the only teams affected. Alison Ross (Hagley I), Prasanna Gulasekharam and Delwyn Barrett (South Brighton II) were also absent. Presumably, the Canter-
bury Badminton Association considered postponing the round until later in the season, or even to play it on an evening this week. That would have enabled all teams to be at full strength for what is the top grade in Christchurch badminton. Instead, the association boxed on and played the round with several teams below strength. It showed. Certainly it was a decision which did not meet with unanimous approval. Bryndwr-Y.M.C.A. I took advantage of the plight of Railway I to beat it, 5-3, and move to the top of the table. Paula Thorpe won the Mary Quant award, based on the best women’s singles performance, for her win over the experienced Terri Perry. Hagley I had a tough battle before pulling through against South Brighton I, 5-3. In this case, two nationally-ranked women, Miss Hellyer and Miss Ross, would have been opposing each other.
The losses suffered by South Brighton I and Railway I dropped them to third and fourth respectively.
Christchurch stayed in fifth place, six points off the fourth-placed team, with a 6-2 win over Railway 11. Brent Wilson’s display in edging out the youngster, John Fletcher, 18-17, in the third game won him the Tabac award for the top men’s performance. Karen Rogers must have pushed Miss Thorpe for the women’s award after her win over the province’s fourth-ranked player, Rosey Askew.
Bryndwr-Y.M.C.A. II made short work of the weakened South Brighton II to win, 8-0, lifting its points tally from 2 to 16 in one afternoon. None of the matches went beyond two games. Knox-Canterbury had no such luck, however, and was well beaten by Hagley 11.
