Top mark to University
University still has some way to go to capture its best form of last season, but it could take pride from its points in “The Press” Cup competition on Saturday.
It was awarded the full 12 out of 12 for sportsmanship, which is very different from some of the returns it got last year, returns which left it a distant last in the competition. University’s opponent, Hornby, also received a perfect score for sportsmanship, while six teams shared the top mark of six for how well they played.
University’s total of 18 was the highest of Saturday’s round. The lead is still held by Suburbs, but Belfast is poised to hit the front once it plays its night game. Belfast is already up with the four teams which are a
game ahead through having played their matches in the night round. Points awarded on Saturday were:
University 12 (out of 12 for sportsmanship), 6 (out of eight for playing to its abilities), total 18; Belfast, 11, 6, 17; Albion, 10, 6, 16; Hornby, 12, 4, 16; Burnside, 10, 6, 16; Suburbs, 11, 5, 16, Linwood, 10, 6, 16; Lincoln College, 11, 5, 16; Lyttelton, 8,6, 14; High School Old Boys, 10, 5, 15; Christchurch, 8, 6, 14; Marist, 8,6, 14; MerivalePapanui, 8,5, 13; New Brighton, 7,5, 12; Shirley, 6,5, 11; Sydenham, 7,4, 11. Total points: Suburbs 62, Linwood 57, Albion 56, Lyttelton, Belfast 55, University, Lincoln College, Burnside 46, Shirley 45, Hornby High School Old Boys 43, Meri-vale-Papanui, Marist, Christchurch 41, New Brighton 40, Sydenham 35. The first four teams named are a game ahead of the others.
