Willis fires bouncer
NZPA-PA London The England cricket captain, Bob Willis, has blamed the shortage of good players as the main reason for recent failures at test level. In his first full interview since returning from Pakistan because of illness, he said on Central Television: “We hear all kinds of excuses, but we haven’t got enough good players. “We are in a period of transition and it is going to take quite a while to come out of it.”
Questioned on the team’s off-the-field conduct in New Zealand and Pakistan, Willis reacted sharply to the criticism of certain players. “It would appear that now cricketers are wellpaid, they come into the film star category and their every movement is monitored by the press and media. “I think some of the people doing this are very unsavoury and I don’t think relations with the press will ever be the same again,” said Willis.
