Former Kiwi gets TV job
Michael O’Donnell, a former Canterbury and New Zealand representative, will join Television New Zealand’s rugby league commentary team this season.
The Kiwi full-back in 10 tests and 18 other matches between 1977 and 1981, O’Donnell is still a very effective player for the Marist-Western Suburbs club in Christchurch. He is also the recordholder for most points (1658) and goals (700) in Canterbury club football. O’Donnell, aged 31, had his introduction to the code as a youngster in Blackball on the West Coast and transferred to Christchurch in 1970.
The TVNZ rugby league commentary “team” will consist of Tony Palmer, a television sports officer, and O’Donnell, who replaces
John Percival, a former international referee from Auckland. “It was decided that it would be more suitable to have a player, and O’Donnell, of all the more recent Kiwis, seemed most suited to our requirements,” a TVNZ spokesman said.
