Boatmaster examinations popular
Ministry of Transport examinations for owners of small craft and fishing vessels are becoming more popular throughout New Zealand and Christchurch is no exception, says a local tutor. Captain F. R. Keer-Keer said about 75- Christchurch boat-owners had enrolled for the boatmaster course at the Christchurch Polytechnic this year. Most of the course members were amateur yachtsmen who wanted to gain' their certificate of competency as a boatmaster, he said. The boatmaster course started in February and course members will sit the Ministry examination in several weeks. A second course, for yachtmasters, will begin on May 21 and Captain Keer-Keer expected about 60 people to enrol for the course. The courses, which are run in seven New Zealand centres, have gained in popularity since their inception five years ago. Captain Keer-Keer said this year’s course had been the largest he had tutored. Many of the recognised boating associations recommended that their members attend the courses, he said. “The courses concentrate on
increasing the safety aspect of boating and the responsibilities the boatmasters have under the marine regulations and how they relate to other water users.” Captain Keer-Keer said he strongly recommended the courses to all owners of small craft.
