Mutton market plight

PA Tauranga The depressed export mutton market might force farmers to kill their old ewes in the paddock rather than send them to the freezing works, according to the Meat Producers’ Board deputy chairman, Mr N. Mcßae. Mr Mcßae addressed a meeting of 35 farmers at Paengaroa, near Te Puke, on the present state of the export meat industry. “I believe we have turned

the comer as far as our lamb sales are concerned and overseas sales of beef are good at present,” Mr Mcßae said. “But mutton is a big problem in the export scene.” But for S.M.P.s and the price-smoothing scheme, the average loss on ewes last season would have been $2.80 a head, he said. The average loss this season would be about $4.80 and for some poorer grades as much as $B.
